Faces of the Elderly

Hal Kahn

"I create photographs as a self-prescribed therapy for long-term, incurable illness. My goal is to create work that is simultaneously deeply personal and universal.

"When we are elderly and nearing the end of life, it is profoundly uplifting to be reminded that the cycle of life will continue indefinitely. I have come to believe that the closer we get to the end, the more we value our brief lives.

"I believe that too often older people are marginalized in today's society. My work makes the point that grey hair and wrinkles should be seen as signs of strength and endurance, not as targets for the cosmetics industry.

"My work has been exhibited at the Harwood Art Center, Albuquerque, N.M.; New Mexico Art League, Albuquerque, N.M.; Eggman and Walrus Gallery, Santa Fe, N.M.; Foto Forum, Santa Fe, N.M.; Salmagundi Gallery, New York; Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, N.J.; Gallerium, Vancouver, Canada; the National Council on Aging, Arlington, Va., and other venues." - HK
