Curator's Statement:

In an age that moves in fragments — quick glances, scrolling feeds, the endless churn of spectacle — Andy Charnas slows down. Some Views of San Francisco is the record of that slowing: a body of street photography made by walking, watching, and waiting until a scene reveals itself.

Charnas's San Francisco is not a postcard. It is a city of contradictions held in the same frame — extravagant wealth beside visible poverty, sweeping natural beauty against hard urban edges, tenderness in public view. Hugs on Van Ness Street, Sisters – Polk Street, and Street Poet each catch an unguarded moment: a gesture, a glance, a presence that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Charnas calls these "simple photos of a complicated city," and that simplicity is deceptive — it is the product of patience, not ease.

For Charnas, the camera is less a tool than a practice. The photographer describes the act of making these images as a way of breaking out of the ego, of becoming "discovering, aware, amazed, and grateful." That openness is visible in the work: these are pictures made with rather than of their subjects, attentive to the dignity and complexity of the people who make up the city's many sides.

Taken together, the photographs in this exhibition resist the fragmentation Charnas names as a condition of our time. They ask us to look longer, to hold contradiction without resolving it, and to find — in the particular streets and faces of San Francisco — a kind of wholeness.
